Attendance

Good attendance matters.

We want your child to succeed at school and we need your help to make sure they have good attendance and punctuality.

Every morning, to help your child to settle into the school day, we open our classroom doors at 08:45.  This allows for a ten minute 'soft start' to the day before school lessons begin at 08:55.  We ask that you try to arrive at the school during this ten minute period as it is important that your child is in their classroom at 08:55.

To help your child, you can:

  • talk to your child about how going to school every day will help them do well in school and achieve their hopes and dreams
  • keep an attendance chart at home. At the end of the week, you could reward your child with a visit to the park, a new book, a break from doing chores, a special treat if they have been in school every day
  • make sure your child is in bed at a reasonable time
  • trust the school. If your child complains of a stomachache or headache, and medical concerns have been ruled out, please send them to school and let us know that they are feeling a bit 'under the weather'.  If they get worse, we will call you
  • send your child to school if they have a cold but no fever (less than 100 degrees)
  • find a relative, friend or neighbor who can take your child to school if you can’t make it.
  • contact your child's teacher if your child is absent to find out what they missed
  • arrange medical and dental appointments for weekdays after school.

Good attendance and punctuality has a positive impact on progress in learning. The following scale shows the percentages and how they are defined.

100%Excellent
98%Very good
95%Good
92%Satisfactory
90%Below average
85%Poor
80%Unacceptable

Term time holidays

The taking of term time holidays is not acceptable and we remind you of the following:

  • Parents do not have the right to take their children out of school for a holiday during term time.
  • Parents must request in writing to the Headteacher for an authorised absence if required, and only the Headteacher has the discretion over whether to approve the request or not.
  • Only requests considered by the Headteacher to be in exceptional circumstances may be approved.
  • Schools are open to pupils on 190 days of the year which leaves 175 days for holidays and visiting family.
