Term time holidays
It is the policy of Cardiff Council and Gabalfa Primary School NOT to authorise term time holidays or heritage leave, unless under exceptional circumstances.
Cardiff Council has issued the following advice to schools:
- Parents do not have the right to take their children out of school for a holiday during term time.
- Parents can apply to the Headteacher for an authorised absence if required, and the Headteacher has the discretion over whether to approve the request or not.
- Only requests considered by the Headteacher to be in exceptional circumstances may be approved.
- Schools are open to pupils on 190 days of the year which leaves 175 days for holidays and visiting family.
Parents and Carers are able to request leave from the Headteacher but do not have an automatic right to take a pupil out of school for a holiday. Should a parent or carer decide to take their child/children out of school they may be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice for absences of 10 sessions (5 days) or more.
Parents/Carers should write to the Headteacher, giving reasons for the holiday, and details of the proposed holiday, including departure and return dates, AT LEAST ONE WEEK prior to departure.
For further information please see the schools's Attendance Policy.
